Lawyer arrested for giving convict mobile phones

Police arrested a lawyer in Nicosia on suspicion of passing on three mobile phones to a client who is a convict, it emerged on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old was detained after officers found three mobile phones in a brown envelope he had given his client at the court holding cells.

Mobile phones are banned in prison.

The convict, who is doing an eight year stretch for robbery, was there for a different case, possession of synthetic drugs, daily Politis said.

Following the hearing, he was taken to the holding cells where he was visited by his lawyer who was seen handing him a brown envelope.

Suspecting it contained drugs, the officers notified the drug squad. However, when the envelope was opened, they found three mobile phones, one placed inside a condom and two wrapped in aluminum foil police said.

For the drugs possession, an offence committed while in jail, the convict got two months.

Police said the 43-year-old admitted the offence. A third individual,40, connected to the case was also arrested, police said, without elaborating.
