Maria and Andreas are the most popular baby names in Cyprus, according to a population census released by the statistical service on Wednesday.
In girls’ names Maria is followed by Eleni, Androulla, Georgia, Panayiota, Anna and Christina while in the most popular boys names category Andreas is followed by Giorgos, Costas, Christos, Nikolas, Michalis and Panayiotis.
At the end of 2011, there were 39,883 Marias on the island followed by 36,682 people called Andreas. Eleni was third most popular with 29,393 followed by Giorgos at 26,284.
Children in Cyprus are often traditionally named after their grandparents so many of the same names are recycled thousands of times, as the numbers show.
Some of the least popular names – from a 943 long list – include Felicia, Dalia, Loreta, Chrysalia, Isidora and Mariliza for females, that each had only 10 people with the name.
Male names with the same low ranking popularity include Rodotheos, Merkouris, Morfakis and Memnon.
