Larnaca hospital worker arrested on suspicion of theft

Larnaca general hospital

A 49-year-old Larnaca hospital worker was arrested on Monday in connection with the theft of some €4,000 from a cash box with takings from the accident and emergency department.

He is facing charges of theft by a public official.

At around 4.40am on Monday the man reported to police that ten minutes earlier a hooded man armed with a gun had gone into the hospital, pushed him to the ground and taken the money totalling €3,980.

CID officers who went to the scene took statements from other staff members that aroused their suspicions about the hospital worker, alleging he may have taken the money himself and had filed a false police report.

The accident and emergency at Larnaca General Hospital does not have a video surveillance system.
