Let the learning process start

By Maria Gregoriou

Older kids have gone back to school today so the time for learning is officially here, but learning is not just for the kids.

Next week the Home for Cooperation in Nicosia kicks off its autumn – winter 2015 season with a number of courses and workshops.

First up, on Monday the home will offer two levels of Turkish language courses.

Spryoula Mavrommati will be teaching the course for beginners at 6pm and the course for those at the intermediate level 7.30pm.

With the beginners’ course Mavrommati aims to teach students the basic vocabulary used in daily circumstances, while also giving an understanding of how the Turkish grammar system works so that basic communication can be achieved.

For those who are a little bit more advanced, the intermediate course will offer participants the chance to practice their speaking skills. With each speaking exercise, you will further understand the complexity of Turkish grammar.

But the other aspects of learning a language – reading, listening and writing – will also be part of the course.

The objectives are to improve students’ conversational skills, to provide a variety of readings for written comprehension, to develop a good grammar background, to improve listening skills and to introduce students to some examples of Turkish culture.

Mavrommati completed Turkish studies in Bulgaria and Cyprus and Business Administration in the UK. She has great experience as a teacher in private and public schools teaching Turkish as a second language. She is an activist in the bi-communal activities implemented in Cyprus and abroad.

Between the two Turkish lessons, Roger Heinrich will be running a Djembe workshop from 6.45pm until 7.45pm.

Heinrich, who completed his study on drums, methodology, pedagogy and psychology at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, tends to teach everyone involved about drumming, from how to play the djembe to learning all about the different techniques, styles and rhythms that go with the musical instrument.

Participants will get to know how to use their hands to make sound while in a group, so there will be a lot of socialising and fun having to be made.

On Tuesday those of you who want to start learning Greek, or who want to improve their Greek, can do so with Ioanna Christou.

The 6pm class will cover the basics of grammar and language functions. Gradually you will learn the skills to cope with everyday situations.

Those who know the basics can be part of the 7.30pm class, during which you will learn more vocabulary and strengthen your grammar skills. Writing and spelling will also be part of the learning curve, and by the end of the course, you will feel more confident to talk the Greek talk.

Christou studied Greek language and literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She has attended several seminars related to teaching Greek as a second/foreign language.

Monday’s learning events ends with a Pithkiavli (shepherd’s pipe) workshop at 8pm until 9pm with Elli Michael.

This introduction offers an introduction to the aspects of the native Cypriot flute and its playing techniques will also be taught.

Learning by the traditional method of listening, watching and imitating, participants will explore some Cypriot folk tunes and develop different ways of interpreting them on the instrument.

And this workshop really is for everyone as no music notation knowledge is required.

If language and music are not your thing why not participate in the sumba and salsa workshop that will start on Tuesday.

Join in the zumba fun at 7pm until 8pm with Athina Koumdiou, who has been practising zumba for the last five years.

Salsa classes will be held from 8.15pm until 9.15pm. Instructed by Charis Marathefti, these classes will introduce the basic steps and variations of Salsa.
