Cyprus issue and island’s regional role focus of Anastasiades’ US meetings

Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides has said that the contacts President Nicos Anastasiades had in Chicago and his addresses to the American Jewish Committee and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs focused on two issues, the Cyprus problem and the island’s role in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In statements on Anastasiades` visit to Chicago, which has ended, and the president back is in New York, Christodoulides said Anastasiades had updated his interlocutors about the recent developments on the Cyprus problem and the prospects ahead, and referred to the role which Turkey is called to play.

As regards Cyprus` role in the region, Christodoulides said: “The Republic of Cyprus can provide solutions to regional and international problems and it is important that this role is recognised, especially by the US, a country which is interested in developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

Referring to Anastasiades` visit to New York, Christodoulides said the president will have very important meetings there, mainly with the US administration –  US Vice President Joe Biden on September 29 and the Secretary of State John Kerry on September 26.

The spokesman also said Anastasiades had already sent messages to US officials from Chicago, as regards Turkey.
“These were very concrete messages, since Turkey must prove through very concrete actions at various levels its declarations that she wants a settlement of the Cyprus problem,” Christodoulides noted.

Anastasiades will also have meetings with other officials such as the Russian foreign minister and the head of the Russian representation, the head of the Chinese representation and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

His contacts start Wednesday with a luncheon he will host for the Permanent Representatives of the five permanent members of the Security Council. Late in the evening he will meet with Archbishop Demetrios and will attend a dinner hosted by the Federation of Cypriot American organisations.
On Saturday afternoon he will meet separately with  Kerry,  Ban, and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Meetings are also slated with Greece`s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Egypt`s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

He will address the UN General Assembly on the adoption of the Development Agenda, also on Saturday and deliver a speech at the Brookings Institution and meet with the leadership of the American-Jewish Committee. (CNA)
