Cyprus Mail 70th anniversary archive uploads: the late 1970s

In the years after the invasion, the Cyprus Mail inevitably devoted many pages to the humanitarian and political crises that followed the events of July and August 1974.

But there were other important highlights too. One was the sudden death of Archbishop Makarios on August 3, 1977.

Another was the shooting dead of a former Egyptian minister at the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia in February 1978 which led to a gun battle between Egyptian commandos and Cypriot national guardsmen at Larnaca airport

  • EOKA-B disbands in aid of unity: The notorious underground EOKA-B movement, responsible for a militant campaign against Archbishop Makarios, announces that it has disbanded itself – February 11, 1978

  • Arab gunmen kill Arab chief and seize hostages: Former Egyptian minister is shot dead during a conference at the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia. Eleven hostages are seized and taken aboard a plane heading for Libya – February 19, 1978

  • Diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Egypt broken off after fierce gun battle between Egyptian commandos and Cypriot national guard at Larnaca airport. Fighting broke out after plane carrying hostages returns to Cyprus – February 21, 1978
