Emergency services were called out to 29 fires and 16 other incidents in the 24 period ending at 6am on Sunday, the Cyprus News Agency reported.
One of the first calls, and the most serious incident, was at a butcher shop in Latsia in Nicosia where a young foreign worker had caught her hand in a mincing machine. Although she was rushed to hospital, doctors could not save her hand despite operating for two hours.
The labour inspection department is investigating the butcher shop to establish whether adequate safety measures were in place. (CNA)
