Soaring blue days, endless indigo nights, shimmering silver sunlight on fields of gold… without colour, we’d be immeasurably more discontented. Can you imagine a monochrome world? We’d all be black of heart, grow grey hair and, ultimately, show life the white flag. Red instils passion, blue brings calm, yellow makes us cheerful and green restores clarity. Colour, it seems, has huge benefits. Which is why the upcoming Run In Colour is possibly a brilliant way to boost both your mental and physical health.
Taking place in Limassol on October 17, Run In Colour is a sparkling blend of fun and fitness: an exuberant event aimed at every age and ability. Powered by the Bank of Cyprus, and sponsored by the University of Nicosia, MTN and Orbex, it’s the must-do of the month – a unique and inspirational way to boost your fitness and cement your friendships while having a jolly good time. Inspired by Holi – the ancient Hindu religious festival that celebrates love, fun and frolics through the throwing of colour – it’s part of an international event series that involves, according to main organiser Lydia Zannettou, “a colourful 5km fun run which ends with an extremely entertaining music and dance festival”.
“The actual event is based on the Indian festival of Holi,” she says, “and it’s all about love and peace and good above evil. That’s what colour does to you; colour is about having fun and warmth and love and joy and happiness.” The actual run, she explains, is along the scenic coastal path from Molos to the Enaerios parking lot. But while the main idea is to motivate participants to boost their wellness and health, there’s no actual competition involved: “It’s not the time it takes that’s the focus of the event, but rather the experience of running with others, of having a fantastic time. In fact, you’ll probably find yourself circling through the colour stations several times,” she adds.
Placed at intervals of approximately one kilometre along the route, these stations are certain to be a massive draw. Runners may start off in pristine white tshirts but they’ll end the course plastered in a riot of shades – courtesy of the army of volunteers who will be manning the route, equipped with every shade under the sun. And there’s no need to worry about safety issues – all the colours are non-toxic, certified and tested, environmentally safe and completely harmless to humans. Plus, they come out easily, so you can get as colourful as you like without being concerned about your clothes running in the wash!
The excitement doesn’t end with the route, however. Once you’ve crossed the finish line there’s an after party sans compare to look forward to. Music from both local DJs and Greek radio station Off Radio will make for a terrific evening, there’ll be canons on the stage shooting even more colour over the crowds, and glow sticks will be handed out by the bucket load – making sure even the night is lit with vibrant pinks and greens and blues. “Just picture it,” says Lydia. “Everything glowing, fantastic music, an excellent atmosphere and drones and photographers everywhere recording the evening’s entertainment! And,” she adds, “though we don’t want to give too much away, there’ll be a host of other surprises awaiting all the runners once they cross the finish line…”
Sounds like a blast, an event that will truly put all others – pardon the pun – in the shade! And with its ethos of encouraging all and sundry to join in the creativity, there’ll be no impediment to enjoyment. Whether you sprint, dart, lope or scuttle, Run in Colour is all about getting off the couch and into the great outdoors, welcoming everyone from beginners looking to kick-start their fitness routine, to weekend joggers and experienced runners. It’s the perfect event for all ages: everyone is encouraged to join in the excitement, and special ticket prices are available for groups, families and younger children. Hundreds of people have already signed up for the event, so consider this your early warning. Boost your health, creativity and happiness, and prepare to have the time of your life running in colour!
