Man remanded in connection with sexual abuse of a minor

A 43-year-old man living in Larnaca was remanded for eight days on Monday after his partner’s 11-year-old daughter reported to police he had been sexually inappropriate with her over the past three months.

The case came to light on Sunday afternoon when the girl told her mother that since August, whenever her mum was out of the house, he would allegedly enter her room to which he had easy access to as they all lived together, remove her clothes and touch her inappropriately.

Reports say the mother confronted him and that the row escalated to the point where he turned violent taking out a kitchen knife to threaten her. Reportedly the child tried to protect her mother and was slightly injured on the leg. She did not need hospital treatment however.

The girl and her mother went to the police station and reported the suspect. An arrest warrant was issued and he was arrested at 11:30pm that night.

Police could not confirm whether the reported violent incident had occurred.

The suspect denies any involvement in the case saying the complaint against him was an act of revenge over differences he had with his partner. Nevertheless court remanded him for eight days.

The suspect is a foreign national who is a permanent resident of Cyprus while the mother is a political asylum seeker.

The girl was seen by doctors and psychologists while social welfare services have been informed.
