Mona Lisa, give us a smile

By Maria Gregoriou

We all know that the Mona Lisa is probably the most famous painting ever. Plus, we know that her face has been used time and time again in the media and it has been moulded and Photoshopped to take on the characteristics of another popular figure.

American artist Erik Maell knows these facts very well and has created an anthology of the hundreds of pieces of art that have been inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s classic Renaissance masterpiece by the world’s most innovative artists.

The artist and his anthology, Mona Lisa Reimagined, will be at the Philotheou Bookshop in Nicosia tomorrow at 5pm to present the many faces of the Mona Lisa.

The anthology features both established and emerging artists from over 50 countries. Its images are something that all art lovers and artists should have – plus it would make a really good gift now that Christmas is just around the corner.

Maell received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design with a double major in Fine Arts and illustration.

As a painter, he has exhibited his artwork in many solo and group exhibitions across the US and in Europe.

And something very interesting, the artist worked with the Central Bank of Cyprus to create the designs for the first euro coins ever issued for our island.

A reception and a book signing will follow so be ready with your copy in hand.
