Art embodies life

By Maria Gregoriou

On Wednesday the artwork of nine artists will come together at The Collection Gallery in Nicosia under the collective exhibition Embody.

The artists, Marina Zervou, Andreas Nicolaou, Nicolas Antoniou, Zenon Jepras, Savas Georgiades, Kalli Kastori, Nikos Frantzolas, Demetris Neokleous and Lazaros Menelaou, come together to showcase creations which create atmosphere where the visible implies invisible processes.

Zervou draws the human figure in an attempt to understand what lies beyond what we can see. Each representation of the human body reinvents itself, to mirror the artist’s comprehension of reality.

Nicolaou manages to orchestrate the co-existence of many, supplemental compositions in any one work. With this approach the reclining form of the girl also becomes the epicenter of the composition, while also being the departure point of enigmatic states and surprises.

Rather than Antoniou’s work coming from a specific idea or theme, he creates new pictures which generate unknown questions. Thus objects appear to be misplaced, both through time and dimension, and they are placed next to figures which are lost in an intense painterly environment.

Jepras is a storyteller who has come to dig into our past, to record our recollections and reconstruct them to offer us a form of archaeology of memory. Each work holds clues to deeper personal and social narratives, like skeletons hidden in the closet.

Georgiades places before us a true archetypical place full of personal codes and riddles. His work brings to the surface what is, by showing us what he perceives and not what he sees.

Alienation is the issue which concerts Kastori in her work. She focuses on the concept’s multiple meanings. One notion she brings to art is that of how one can create or recreate a self through the imitation of others.

Life remains the source of inspiration for Frantzolas, while Neokleous concentrates on the tension of a personal historical moment, as if looking at a childhood dream.

Group exhibition. Opens October 28 at 8pm until December 5. The Collection Gallery. 15A Lemesos Avenue, Nicosia. Monday-Saturday: 10am-1pm and 4pm-8pm. Tel: 99-585172
