Paedophile suspect to face trial in Paphos

A 73-year-old man accused of sexually harassing his 11-year-old granddaughter will face trial at the Paphos Assize Court on November 25, the Paphos district court ruled on Tuesday.

State prosecutor Simos Simeou asked the court that the defendant remain in custody until the trial starts, for fear of attempting to influence the child or fleeing the country.

The defence objected to the demand, and the court adjourned for Thursday, when it will hear the two sides’ arguments in favour and against the defendant remaining in custody, before issuing a ruling.

Until then, the 73-year-old will remain detained.

The man appeared in a closed session of the court on Tuesday, after his eight-day remand from last Wednesday expired.

According to the police, last Tuesday morning, the 11-year-old girl accompanied by her 33-year-old mother and a Paphos district social worker, entered the Paphos CID and reported that the child’s 73-year-old grandfather for sexual harassing her.

Between August 1, 2015, and October 17, 2015, they claimed, on six separate occasions the 73-year-old acted indecently while alone at home with the girl.

Following the report, the man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.

The 73-year-old has denied all charges.
