Animal welfare outfit on the cards

The meeting was attended by Leo, the president's dog

It has been decided to create an organisation for the welfare and protection of animals, the Animal Party said on Wednesday.

Party chairman Kyriacos Kyriacou made the announcement after a meeting with President Nicos Anastasiades that discussed ways to improve animal welfare.

“Today we had our first official meeting with the president and discussed several issues,” Kyriacou told reporters. “What we have achieved is the political decision to create the organisation for animal protection and welfare.”

Currently, he said, there are many services and departments dealing with animal welfare that did not consult one another.

Kyriacou added that they will consult the authorities so as to achieve a good result and not something that resembled the current state of affairs.

“The other issue we discussed and on which we have made suggestions and recommendations was about raising penalties for animal abuse. We will categorise offences with the corresponding penalties and submit a comprehensive proposal to the justice minister,” Kyriacou said.

The party also discussed the creation of an animal police, something similar to the game fund, which is tasked with the protection of wild life.

Kyriacou also invited the President to attend the first International Conference on animals in Cyprus with the participation of all political parties on March 5. The aim of the conference is to promote the wellbeing of animals and humans, “because when animals do not prosper people don’t prosper.”
