‘Made in Cyprus’ law passed for honey

The House plenum on Thursday passed a law and the accompanying regulations making mandatory the ‘Made in Cyprus’ labelling of honey produced and certified with the territory controlled by the Republic.

The law was shaped based on a recommendation by the European Commission.

Speaking in parliament, the bill’s author’s, DISY MP Kyriacos Hadjiyiannis, said that efforts to pass the law date back to 2008.

He said the delays were due to experts previously advising the government that regulating the matter by law would contradict the EU acquis.

“Too much expertise led us to waste valuable time,” he noted.
