A 60-year-old Ukrainian permanent resident drowned in the sea of Pernera in Paralimni, state pathologist Sofoclis Sofocleous said on Thursday.

Following a post mortem at Larnaca general hospital after his body was found on Wednesday afternoon, Sofocleous said “the cause of death was drowning.”

According to police, at about 3:30pm the man, a Paralimni resident, was brought to shore by a lifeguard who tried to resuscitate him until the arrival of an ambulance.

He was rushed to Famagusta general hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

People on the scene told police the sea had been very rough the past few days and the man had been advised not to go in. Nevertheless he did not heed the advice and went in the waters where he was eventually spotted floating unconscious.
