A 31-year-old man died early on Tuesday morning in Nicosia after he was flung off his motorbike under circumstances that are still being investigated, police said.

Georgios Eleftheriades was driving on Kyriakou Matsi avenue towards the presidential palace roundabout at around 2:50am when the incident took place.

Preliminary examination of the scene suggested he was not wearing a helmet, police said.

According to Nicosia traffic police chief Haris Evripidou the vehicle skidded on the road, hitting an electricity pole and then some rubbish bins.

Eleftheriades was gravely injured from the accident.

Anyone that has any information can contact their closest police station or call the public hotline 1460.
