Times are changing

By Maria Gregoriou

Tonight gallery Apothiki 79 will present the solo painting exhibition 33 Years Later by Spyros Demetriades. This exhibition is of great importance to the artist, as he had his first solo exhibition in Larnaca in December 1982, hence the title.

Referring to the exhibition and why its title marks the passing of so much time, Demetriades said “time has passed by so fast. It seems like just yesterday when I was painting in the various corners of the old town [Larnaca] in October and November of 1982. Now I revisit the old streets and neighbourhoods, where in the past I painted old neoclassic and other houses of importance and I feel I am lost because these buildings of reference do not exist anymore. In their place now stand multistorey buildings hosting Banks and Hotels.”

In those 33 years Demetriades has exhibited in Larnaca three more times. The last exhibition was in 2003.

Apart from being able to view the paintings which also bring together ghosts of the old city together with the vibrant and fast pace that Larnaca finds itself in today, the artist himself will be there to give a talk and present a slideshow to present to the audience how new paintings come to be from inspiration.

For those of you who are interested in architecture and the changing feel of a city, Demetriades will also be adding more art work to the exhibition on Thursday at 6pm. These paintings, as the artist said, are based on his previous watercolours that he made in 1982.

Demetriades continued to say that he will also “present to Larnaca art lovers a selection of oil paintings created over the last five years. This will complete in one all-round way the presentation of paintings over 33 years at Apothiki 79”.

Demetriades, from Limassol, specialised in animation during his studies in Prague. He has had solo exhibitions and been part of group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad.

He exhibited a display of watercolour paintings and presented his book, Limassol My Love at Lygos Gallery, Athens in 1982.

He has also created animations for commercials and educational movies, and the artist has also created illustrations for books.
