The Cyprus Theatre Organisaton (THOC) is getting ready to offer all theatre designers the chance to learn about scenography from international experts Joslin McKinney and Sodja Lotker during a three-day event
Starting on November 28, McKinney – Associate Professor in Scenography and Deputy Head of the School of Performance and Cultural Industries at the University of Leeds – will give a six-hour master class for professional scenographers on materiality from 10am until 4pm.
During the master class all participants will explore the relationship between materials, makers and the experience of scenography, while also considering the extent to which materials themselves can engage the imagination and generate meaning.
The next scenography event will be on November 29 when McKinney will give a one-hour talk at 11am on Scenography and the Body of the Spectator. In the afternoon the associate professor will be back at THOC with Lotker – Artistic Director of the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space – for a second talk. This time the two professionals will give a two-hour talk at 6pm about Emerging Trends and Shifting Tides of Scenography, Moving On and Expanding.
The first talk will take the participants on a journey through recent approaches to scenography where the use of objects and materials are central. The talk will also include examples of work by Kris Verdonck, Royal de Luxe and Verdensteatret, while also exploring the idea of engaging the whole body of the spectator.
In the afternoon all those present will have the chance to explore how our perception of scenography has changed in the last decade.
The last event will be a three-hour master class on Curatorship with Lotker.
Lotker will present four performing exhibitions that she has worked on for the Prague Quadrennial since 2003 to show how easily the traditional ways of exhibiting (not only scenography) can be challenged, as she explains.
She will try to unfold her own system of curation by talking about a series of terms such as curations, situation, hierarchy, change, local/locus, love/trust, dramaturgy, alienation, scenography, tradition, fun, impossibility and more. She will also propose that the term ‘performing’ in performing exhibition does not only stand for live but also for non-illustrating exhibitions that perform and enable ambiguous inbetween situations for multiplicity of relations, experiences and meanings to appear, true third spaces where real and imagined meet.
If you are interested in taking part, send a short CV to [email protected] by November 19.
McKinney has experience as a set and costume designer. She has also actively contributed to the development of scenography as an area of academic study internationally.
Lotker has worked for the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space since 1999, where she has made numerous live scenography exhibitions and events. She also works as a dramaturg for independent theatre, dance, media and site specific projects.
