It is true that food unites us – especially in Cyprus where the smoke from the cooking of Souvla on Sundays very much merges from one barbeque to another. So, seeing that food has this power of creating social interaction, the Renewal project (a community focusing on developing the economic and social potential of the greater Famagusta region) took on a film project entitled A Taste of Famagusta.
The film project, which took place in May, concentrates on four participants, two from Deryneia and two from Famagusta; two generations; two men and two women; two languages; and people from two sides of the line who will share two unknown dishes.
These pairs of two tell a story about Famagusta and Deryneia’s culinary journey through local recipes, food habits and tastes of the area.
The project is made-up of four video clips. The first was released on the Renewal YouTube Channel, and other social media channels on the first of the month.
The second clip will be released on Monday, the third on November 23 and the last on November 30.
The Taste of Famagusta invites the four protagonists to take part in a cooking challenge where the older generation will present two dishes to the young contestants, who will have to identify the dishes, find the recipes and eventually prepare the dishes themselves.
By being challenged and by working together, the four participants will go on a journey of discovery where Cypriots from different generations and the two communities will use diverse cultural connections to establish personal and inter-communal relationships.
