All day schools now open five days a week

Optional all-day schools will now operate five days a week, after a Cabinet decision on Tuesday for them to operate on Wednesdays too.

Fourteen primary schools participate in the programme – whereby children can stay in the afternoon if they wish – but they have closed at lunchtime on Wednesdays.

“The expansion to apply the programme to Wednesdays has been a long standing demand of parents”, Government spokesman Victor Papadopoulos said, adding “the ministry considers that now is the appropriate time to meet this request because it will help to meet the needs of working parents and also to provide the opportunity for a greater number of teachers to be employed.”

The cost of extending the operation of the optional all-day school is expected to reach approximately €1,060,000 for each school year.
