A festival of dance

By Maria Gregoriou

Dance, they say, is narration in movement and if you like the stories the body can tell us then you will be very glad to hear that the seventh No-Body Dance/ Movement and Performance Arts Festival will be ready to shake Nicosia with a number of performances from Saturday for three days.

Apart from giving us a total of eight performances, including new works by seven Cyprus dance and performance artists, the festival will also run a parallel event on Monday in the form of a workshop.

On Saturday the event starts at 7.30pm with Let’s Be Straight by Eva Korae (visual artist – performer) and Constantina Peter (dramaturge) followed by In the Likeness of… by Konstantina Skalionta (cheoreographer), Keep Hands Clear by Panayiotis Tofi (cheoreographer) and ending with The Box by Inverted – Athina Georgiou (cheoreographer).

Sunday will bring about a whole new dancing environment with Za (Long) OS 9/11 by the Klinisch Getestet Dance Group and Nektarios Rodosthenous (musician), Dual II by Turkish-Cypriot choreographer Sevim Akpinar and Turkish-Cypriot dancer Toya Akpinar, Vente Abulante by Vision Q – Aneesha Michael (choreographer), and Departure by Portuguese dance artist Mafalda Deville.

Deville, who is considered an important artist of contemporary dance, will also give a three-hour workshop on Monday from 10am until 1pm.

This is the first time that Turkish Cypriot choreographers of contemporary dance will participate in such a platform of dance and performing arts.

“This participation is very important not only for the festival but generally for the performing arts, especially contemporary dance in Cyprus and the particular participation of Sevim Akpinar adds to the contemporary and innovative spirit of the festival,” organisers said.

“This participation strengthens the possibilities for communication, cooperation and exchange of ideas and experiences between all the artists on the island and provides the basis for coexistence for a common creative artistic future in Cyprus,” they added.

Performances on both Saturday and Sunday start at 7.30pm and entrance for each night is €8 and €6. The fee for the workshop is €20 and €15.

The festival is organised by Dance Gate Lefkosia and Dancehouse Lefkosia, and it is under the auspices of the Mayor of Nicosia, Constantinos Yiorkadjis.
