Art crossing borders

By Maria Gregoriou

Calling all contemporary artists from Cyprus who would like to exhibit their work at the Petah Tikva Museum of Art in Israel, this could be your chance.

The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, in association with the Pierides Foundation, is announcing an open call under the name So Close Yet So Far Away for artists who live and work in Cyprus or Cypriot artists who live abroad to submit proposals to take part in the exhibition by January 29, 2016.

Artists who wish to take part in this initiative will use their work to reflect on history, memory and politics in relation to contemporary Cypriot culture and to the many complexities of Cypriot identity.

Issues of multiculturalism, crossings, displacement, migration and hybridisation will be also crucial in the works presented.

Proposals need to be a maximum of 300 words and to clearly describe the work or event, its concept and rationale, and its expected contribution to the general theme of the exhibition. They must also be accompanied by a short biography of the artist or artist group, and by visual material and technical specifications.

All proposals must be submitted to the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, either in hard copy or electronically at [email protected]

In the event that a selected proposal entails new artwork production, a budget of up to €500 can be made available for the work to be realised.

The exhibition will be presented in the autumn of 2016.
