Six men from airport sent back to Switzerland

The six French passport holders detained in Larnaca since Saturday were sent back to Switzerland on Tuesday afternoon, which is where they arrived from, police said on Wednesday.

The six men, five Turkish nationals and one Algerian, aged between 25 and 32, arrived on Saturday at 7.30pm on a low budget flight from Basel in Switzerland, and raised the suspicions of airport immigration officials when they said they had come to Cyprus as tourists for four days.

According to an Interpol message, police said, the Algerian and two of the Turks had close ties to Islamist networks.

Police spokesman Andreas Angelides had said the remaining three were being sent back because they had not provided sufficient explanations during interrogations as to why they wanted to come to Cyprus.

Police said that even though they hold French passports, the standard procedure is for them to be returned to the country they arrived from, in this case Switzerland, and from there, it is up to Swiss authorities on how they will handle the case.
