Trial of suspected paedophile grandfather begins next month

The trial of the 73-year old man who is suspected of sexually harassing his 11-year-old granddaughter was set for December 7 by a Paphos court on Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested on October 20, after he was reported for sexual harassment by his 11-year-old granddaughter.

The girl, accompanied by her mother, and a social welfare official had reported to the Paphos CID that between August 1 and October 17 , on six separate occasions the 73-year-old acted indecently while alone at home with the girl. The man, who was arrested the same day, denied all charges.

The court granted the prosecution’s request that the trial takes place behind closed doors to protect the girl, who is to testify on December 7.

Friends and relatives of the suspect, both from Paphos and Nicosia, went in court on Wednesday to show their support to the 73-year old. He is to remain in custody until the commencement of the trial.
