A celebration of light

By Maria Gregoriou

Join in a very Swedish tradition on Friday when children from the Swedish children’s choir will dress all in white and sing to celebrate Santa Lucia.

Santa Lucia is a traditional song, first transcribed by Teodoro Cottrau. The song has been given various lyrics to accommodate it to the winter-light festival of Saint Lucy in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway.

The festival of Santa Lucia – Saint Lucy – is one of the main cultural traditions in Sweden and is considered to bring hope, light and faith with it. The celebration is in memory of Lucia, a young girl who helped the Christians during the Roman Empire.

The celebrations include a procession of children who sing various holiday songs, including Santa Lucia – which will be sung on Friday. The girl who leads the procession, who is symbolic of Saint Lucy, wears a long, white dress and a wreath of candles on her head. She is followed by children holding candles and wearing festive costumes.

To make sure that we all enjoy this Swedish tradition as much as possible, there will also be Christmas treats and drinks.
