A world made of clay

By Maria Gregoriou

Tomorrow, Art will show us that, as well as bringing work to life from a place of inspiration and talent, it also brings with it a whole bunch of characters that may make our lives – and the life of the artist – much better for having met them.

Such characters will be introduced to us during the solo ceramic art exhibition The Bum and Roguish Gang by Michaella Karagiorgi – who is from Paphos, graduated from the Graphic Design Department of TEI Athens, and currently works as a ceramicist in Limassol – at the Zmart Gallery in Nicosia.

This exhibiton brings together a jubilant mix of characters who are observed just going about their day, interacting with one another during different day-to-day scenarios.

Karagiorgi’s work conveys the telling of a story, concerning both the life of the everyday and fiction. With a simple form and a very pure approach, the ceramicist externalises the individuality of each character in a way that brings the familiar to the surface and enables the viewer to identify with them and their actions.

This is Karagiorgi’s third exhibition. She does not only create still characters in clay, but also displays their mental state – something that she explores with great love and determination. The outcome are these fragile findings which she now wishes to share with all of us.

Together with these physical forms and the representation of their inner world, comes a feeling of nostalgia as their clothes, their postures and the overall atmosphere of the pieces remind us of a place and time which is no more. This was a time when communication was direct and in real time, facts that are lacking from our day and age.

If you like the work, and if you too would like to use clay to bring your own characters and stories to life, Karagiorgi will be running ceramic art workshops for children and adults on Saturday. The ceramicist will be running two workshops for children from ages five to 12, running from 10am until 11.30am and from 11.30am until 1pm.

The workshop for adults will run from 3pm until 6pm.
