Un-covering music makers

By Maria Gregoriou

It seems the men on the island are taking over the world of beauty and putting it all on display. First the Mr. Cyprus TV pageant makes a bunch of young men dress and undress while sports cars race around them – not to mention having them pose underwater and look a little silly while singing and dancing on stage – and now here comes local rock band Minus One in a Naked Party performance on Saturday.

Any fan of Minus One already knows that the five-member band can give an electrifying performance, and their talent for musical sizzle will certainly be seen on Saturday.

The band, which plays songs from the pop and rock genres but can also be caught blaring out some more modern hits, does not just cover these songs, they re-arrange them and make them sound new.

The boys have been rocking the Cypriot music scene for the past six years, took part in the competition to find a band or singer to represent us in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest and – after making quite an impression – will actually represent us in 2016 (and there is no competition this time around).

You can never get bored with Minus One, because they’re forever renewing their song list. Will they actually be naked on stage, though? Alas, the name refers to a charity photo shoot organised to help the Sophia Foundation for Children and provide free lunches for kids from poor families – and the money raised by the party will go to the same good cause. Rock’n roll!

Performance by the rock band Minus One. December 12. Volks, Charalambou Michael Street, Strovolos, Nicosia. 7pm. €10 with a drink. Tel: 22-744000 or 96-299503
