Anything BUT a few silent nights

By Maria Gregoriou

The chocolates from the advent calendar should be going over the half way mark just around now and this means the celebrations for Christmas are now in full swing. And what would celebrations and the festive season be without a bit of music?

The Flautissimo Limassol Flute Choir will give their second The Magic of Christmas concert tonight in Larnaca with the participation of the Vocal Ensemble of the Larnaca Municipality.

The first concert, held on Sunday in Limassol was a great success, and now the choir and ensemble are ready to do it again.

Get ready to enjoy some famous classical orchestral Christmas music pieces, including the Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, Halleluia by Mozart, Christmas Oratorio by Saint Saens, and Blue Danube waltzes of Strauss. Famous carols will also be sung for everyone to join in.

Meanwhile, the Diastasis Vocal Ensemble and Dance Group will reminisce over the 60s, 70s and 80s with performances of songs by the Beatles, the Bee Gees, the Carpenters, Simon and Garfunkel and more, during three performances.

Starting off in Nicosia on Tuesday and then moving on to Limassol on Thursday and Friday, the ensemble will be joined by singers Stephanos Georgiades and Pavlina Constantopoulou and pianist Michalis Karakatsanis.

These will truly be nights filled with music, dance and enchantment as the costumes and scenery will help our minds become our very own time machines, to take us back to some magical eras of music.

The Christmas music vibe though would just not be complete without concerts by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.

This year the orchestra will perform with the participation of the Nicosia Music Lyceum Choir, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.

Soprano Zoe Nicolaidou, mezzo-soprano Margarita Sygeniotou, tenor Vassilis Kavayias and bass Vangelis Maniatis will complete the concert.

The performances on Thursday in Nicosia, on Friday in Larnaca and in Limassol on Saturday, will include George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, HWV 56: Part A (orchestration by Mozart).

Handel’s oratorio Messiah, is one of the greatest and most popular masterpieces in Western choral literature. The libretto, compiled by Charles Jennens, consists of verses from the Bible and is divided into three parts, which address specific events in the life of Christ.

Part one will be presented which is primarily concerned with the Advent and Christmas stories. Handel’s setting abounds with arias and choruses of unsurpassed inventiveness and inspiration, which range from the solemnly prophetic to irrepressible joy.
