Young driver arrested after car chase

A 21-year-old driver was arrested in the early hours of Sunday after police shot out one of his front tyres in an attempt to apprehend him.

During a routine traffic patrol in the Strovolos area of Nicosia at around 2am, officers signalled the driver to stop for a spot check but instead he took off, driving a reckless and dangerous manner, a police report said.

The officers chased him down, and with the help of another patrol, his front tyre was shot at twice, but the 21-year-old kept going until the car eventually came to a halt and he was nabbed.

A breathalyser test showed his alcohol level at 78mg instead of the legal 22mg. A more accurate blood test at the police station indicated it was 83mg, police said.
