Airlifted Syrian sailor arrested for feigning illness

File photo

Police arrested a Syrian sailor after he apparently pretended to be ill so that he could be airlifted to Cyprus, it emerged on Tuesday.

The man was transferred to Paphos hospital on Monday afternoon where doctors determined that nothing was wrong.

He was part of the crew of Moldovan freighter Bee Master, which was sailing 90 nautical miles north west of Paphos at the time.

Police dispatched a helicopter to pick up the sailor who later proved to be in good health.

Authorities suspect he had tried to trick them in a bid to remain on the island. Reports said procedures for his deportation were already underway.
