A thick black smoke was covering the SOPAZ area of Nicosia on Monday from a fire in the north, the fire services reported but as the afternoon wore on it began to dissipate somewhat, authorities said.
“There seems to be less smoke now,” fire brigade spokesman Nicos Longinus said just after 4pm. “We are waiting for the UN to send us a report.”
Turkish Cypriot web reports said the fire broke out in a junk yard containing old tyres.
“There is a long dark cloud of smoke stretching eastwards towards Dali, which is visible from Strovolos,” one eyewitness told the Cyprus Mail.
