MEMBERS of the public are urged to be cautious as regards fundraising and charitable organisations when being asked to donate during for the festive season, the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

“Deceitful individuals exploiting public solidarity, do not hesitate to set up non-profit organisations and illegally organise fundraisers and charities… for the needy,” warned an announcement.

It added that unsuspecting state or local government officials, respond, in some cases positively, invitations addressed to them for “charitable” events to be held under their auspices and for which fundraising permits are required.

“This gives the event a formal and legal semblance ,” the ministry said.

It urges both state and local government officials, and private individuals “to be vigilant and ensure the legality of any event/fundraiser, before engaging or making contributions”.

A reliable source within the ministry told the Cyprus Mail that they had received reports about bogus fundraisers involving unsuspecting officials.

Even if organisations are legally registered, the official said, they still need special permission from the interior ministry to perform fundraisers, and from the finance ministry to issue lottery tickets.

“Due to the festive season, there is an increase in fundraisers and people need to be extra careful,” the official said.

In a similar case, last month, the parents of six-year old Alexandros, who is in need of bone marrow transplant, had alerted members of the public through media that a bogus fundraiser was taking place to allegedly raise funds for their son’s treatment when they had asked for no such thing.
