Fifty prisoners pardoned for Christmas

Central prisons in Nicosia

Two days before Christmas, 50 people were released from prison, Demetris Syllouris EVROKO head said on Wednesday.

Speaking during an event at the Nicosia Central Prisons, he said several of the convicts received a presidential pardon. However there were still people behind bars for debts, he said.

Efforts were still ongoing to release them from prison within the next few days, Syllouris said.

The event was held in memory of the late Dr. Louis Kariolou, prison psychiatrist and husband of MEP Eleni Theocharous.

Both Syllouris and Theocharous met with the deputy prison boss Anna Aristotelous who briefed them on new programmes running at the prison.

Syllouris and Theocharous were present when prisoners were given a Christmas card and phone credit for the holiday period.

Syllouris, after speaking with some of the prisoners said: “We realised that these 500–600 people will feel cold instead of the warmth of the holidays.”
