New Year cold snap on the way

Cyprus will see rain and low temperatures on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with snow expected in the mountains.

On Wednesday afternoon the weather will be partly cloudy and isolated showers are expected. In the evening the temperature will drop to 5C inland, around 8C on the coast and 1C in the mountains, according to the met office.

“A low pressure system will bring cold weather in the next few days,” Panayiotis Georgiou from the met office said.

On Thursday and Friday inland temperatures are forecast to drop to levels well below average. “The temperatures will be about eight degrees lower than usual,” Georgiou said, “usually they are around 15C to 16C degrees inland.”

There will also be isolated showers on Thursday and it is likely to snow in mountainous and hilly areas. The temperature will hover around 9C inland and -1C in the higher mountains.

The temperatures will fall further on Friday to 7C to 8C with light snow in the mountains. There may also be snow at lower altitudes. In other areas, isolated rain is expected. However, the met official stressed that the forecast is for localised showers only and the public should not expect heavy rainfall.

During the weekend, more rain, sleet and snow are forecast, while the temperatures will gradually rise next week.
