The number of fires rose 19 per cent last year

Fires recorded a 19 per cent increase year-on-year in 2015, the fire service said, causing around €12m in damage.

Rural fires alone rose by 37 per cent, the service said.

In 2015, the fire service received 11,000 calls for assistance.

Between 6am on New Year’s Day and Saturday, the service responded to 24 calls, 12 fires and 11 other incidents. One turned out to be a prank call.

Two of the fires, in Larnaca and Limassol. were caused by fireplace chimneys, which had not been installed properly, the fire service said.

Between the early morning hours on Thursday and Friday, the service responded to 36 calls – 18 fires and 16 other incidents. Two were prank calls.
