Nearly 3,000 booked for smoking indoors over two months

Police said they booked some 2,800 offenders for smoking in closed spaces across the island during a two-month campaign at the end of last year.

According to a police statement, 12,823 inspections had been carried out across the island by officers who chalked up 2,833 reports for smoking.

Most were reported in Nicosia, 848, following 1,549 checks. Paphos came second with 726 in 1,123 inspections, followed by Limassol with 704 in 1,699.

In Larnaca, police reported 385 individuals in 1,023 checks and 145 in Famagusta after 627 checks.

Traffic police also conducted 6,533 checks in vehicles, enforcing the law that bans smoking in public and private vehicles carrying a minor – under 16.

No reports were made.
