After the shelling was over, the lucky man in the bunker was allowed to come out. Surviving unscathed a full assault by a tank delivered the proof his country’s leader expected: ‘a bunker can withstand an attack by a tank’. This was good news for the guinea pig inside the bunker who also designed it, but bad news for his country.
The engineer was ordered before by Enver Hoxha to test the defensive capabilities of its design. Albania’s Stalinist ruler was so impressed by his engineer’s achievement that he subsequently ordered a massive bunker construction programme which stretched over several years.
