Surgeries postponed as blood bank runs short

Cyprus’ blood bank is in need of a lifeline as it is all out of supplies. As a result, scores of surgeries have been postponed and patients in need of transfusions are left helpless.

According to daily Politis, who ran a story on Saturday, not a drop has been left in the blood reserves, meaning there will be nothing available for urgent situations likely to come up over the weekend.

On Friday alone, there were 50 blood transfusions postponed at the Cyprus Thalassaemia Centre while there is a list of individuals waiting since last week and as a result their haemoglobin levels are on borderline levels.

The problem is attributed, according to the report, largely due to the fact it was holiday season and people were unwell.
