European Parliament President Martin Schulz said on Thursday he was confident that a Cyprus settlement was possible in 2016.
Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, and according to a convenience translation of his remarks provided by the Cyprus News Agency, Schulz said: “One of the major opportunities we have this year is Cyprus. I think it is possible to achieve the reunification of Cyprus. Negotiations between the two communities on the island are looking very promising at the moment and we must do everything within the power of the EU institutions to ensure that we play our part in a constructive outcome.”
He added: “If we bring about reconciliation between the two communities then that would represent a huge step forward and it might be seen as a symbol of encouragement that if you show goodwill and patience you can overcome breaches, divides and that could be a source of inspiration for overcoming conflicts elsewhere. So it is not my only source of hope but it is indeed a source of hope.”
