Larnaca general hospital

A doctor and a nurse were physically assaulted and several other nurses were verbally abused on Tuesday morning at the emergency room of Larnaca General hospital when a mentally disturbed young man had an uncontrolled fit of rage while waiting to be examined.

According to eye-witness accounts, the man, 26, lost his self-control with no apparent reason shortly after 7am while staff called for the attending psychiatrist to come to the emergency room to see him.

During the episode, the young man grabbed a female doctor by the throat and hit her in the chest, resulting in injuries to her ribs.

He also assaulted a female nurse, and his own father, who had accompanied him to the emergency room.
Police were subsequently able to immobilise the man, who was then examined by a psychiatrist, who prescribed a medical regimen.

The man was then transferred to the Athalassa Mental hospital, where he was held.

A police report said the 26-year-old had arrived at the emergency room shortly after 7am, under the influence of drugs and in poor psychological state, and assaulted the hospital staff for no apparent reason.

After the incident, nurses and doctors called for better security at the hospital, as well as more staff for the emergency room.

They also demanded that more efficient procedures are introduced for the immediate admission of psychiatric patients to the appropriate hospital wings.
