The Nicosia horse racing club has cancelled all meetings until February 7 after a shot was fired at a judge last Sunday evening. No one was injured in the incident.

According to a written statement, the Nicosia Racing Club decided to cancel all meetings to protest the criminal act against the chairman of the judges and show its support for their work.

The cancellation affects five meetings.

“The only result such actions have is the destruction of all the efforts to tackle the serious problems faced by the racetrack and to rescue the sport, which supports thousands of families,” the statement said.

The club called on the state to take all necessary measures to protect people working at the racetrack and ensure its smooth operation.

The shot was fired at the 40-year-old while he was driving his car in Nicosia at around 8pm.

It smashed the window of the right rear door, according to police.
