Solomou Square cordoned off after abandoned rucksack found (updated)

Bomb squad officers checking bag

The Solomou Square in down-town Nicosia was cordoned off shortly after noon Friday, due to an abandoned rucksack found by the adjacent traffic lights, which police suspected might have been an explosive device.

Several policemen sealed off the scene, diverting pedestrians and traffic around the square, while waiting for the bomb squad to arrive.

The incident was over about one hour later, after it was revealed that the rucksack contained personal belongings, which reportedly fell off a motorcycle.

Solomou Square is a particularly busy spot in Cyprus’ capital, connecting Makarios Avenue, the city’s major commercial artery, with the old city, and featuring a transit hub for Nicosia’s buses.
