Main suspect arrested in connection with supermarket shooting (updated)

Stavros Benakis

Police on Monday afternoon arrested the main suspect of a shooting outside a supermarket in Anthoupolis, Nicosia.

Stavros Benakis, 23, was arrested at the Ayios Dhometios crossing point while returning from the occupied areas, police said. No other information was immediately available.

Earlier on Monday, police said they had arrested two men in connection with Friday’s shooting.

The two suspects, 31 and 23, were arrested on Sunday afternoon. They were in a car returning from the occupied areas, police said.

A small quantity of cannabis was found at the 31-year-old’s home during a search later on.

Police believe the two men were accompanying Benakis.

Benakis was sought in connection with shooting and injuring a 45-year-old man outside a supermarket in Anthoupolis.

The victim suffered two wounds in the arm. He was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery.

The incident took place at 7.20pm, following a heated argument between the two men.
