A 60-year-old man and a woman, 37, were remanded in custody for eight days on Tuesday in connection with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The pair were arrested on Monday evening by immigration officers who were carrying out a search for foreigners living in Cyprus without a permit. A 29-year-old woman was also arrested but was later released.

One of the suspects, a 60-year-old Cypriot, responded to the officers’ knock on the door but delayed opening.

At the same time, the officers noticed commotion inside and decided to go around the back of the house. There, they spotted a 37-year-old Filipino woman with two handguns – one revolver – and 51 bullets in her possession.

A subsequent search of the house found an empty pistol magazine and 200 bullets.

The woman claimed that the 60-year-old gave her the guns when he realised that police were at the door. The man refuses to co-operate.
