Shots fired during arrest of motorcycle thieves

Police fired shots in the air in a bid to arrest four youths in Limassol suspected of stealing a motorcycle.

The teenagers were arrested after they tried to sell the motorcycle back to the owner.

Three of the youths – a 16-year-old Cypriot, a Kurd and Romanian, 19 – were arrested while an 18-year-old Russian managed to escape, police said.

Police said the owner heard that someone was trying to sell his motorcycle, stolen on January 5.

The man contacted them, pretending he was interested. Meanwhile, police organised a sting operation.

On Monday evening, the man showed up at the location agreed with the suspects, who arrived on two motorcycles, including the stolen one.

Police appeared on the scene and had to fire shots in the air to stop the suspects from fleeing.

Three were detained while an arrest warrant was issued for the fourth, who is known to police in connection with other cases.

Police found out that the second motorcycle was also stolen, leading them to conclude that they were dealing with a gang that stole bikes and then sold them.
