Larnaca district court on Thursday sentenced to prison a 40-year-old man having found him guilty of sexually abusing an underage girl.

The man, a Greek national living in a refugee housing estate in Larnaca, was found guilty of sexually exploiting a child and corrupting a minor. On each count, he was handed down a three-year jail sentence. The two sentences will run concurrently.

The case dates back to the January 2009 to June 2010 period. At the time, the defendant was aged 35, the victim was under 13.

The defendant was the brother-in-law of the girl’s father, who is deceased. During the material time, the girl was living in the defendant’s house.

According to testimony heard in court, the man would sexually abuse the girl when they were alone in the house. The abuse also took place in a shed outside the house and in a nearby construction site.

The complaint had been filed by the girl herself.

Several witnesses had taken the stand in the drawn-out trial.

Immediately after sentencing the sexual predator was taken directly to the central prisons. He cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the girl.
