Viewing and creating a variety of art

By Maria Gregoriou

The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the Leventis Gallery have a number of events planned to bring us closer to art. Some involve looking at art and others creating art, but all will inspire us to see things a little differently.

The museum is offering two guided tours of its permanent collection today in Greek and next Friday in English.

This first round of guided tours, as there will be more very soon, will be under the title The Fortification of Nicosia through the ages. This theme has come about because of the recent upgrade of the interactive multimedia application The Walls of Nicosia.

Through the museum’s rare maps collection, visitors will be able to discover the Venetian fortifications of the city of Nicosia. The tour will give the opportunity to either gain knowledge or enrich your understanding of the design, structure and construction of the walls, which to this day encompass the busy centre of the capital, as well as the historic events related to the fortification of the city.

The interactive part of the tour will be the highlight of the event, as a 3D digital presentation will be shown on a state-of-the-art touch screen. The presentation will include the development and evolution of the area’s topography through the ages as well as the modification of the fortifications of the city during the Frankish and Venetian Periods.

The tours will be guided by Curator Elena Poyiadji Richter. Give the museum a call if you are interested in taking the tours beforehand as places are limited.

Now onto an event that gives children aged five to 12 the chance to look at and make art – the Leventis Gallery will have a morning with the impressionists tomorrow.

The children will also have their own special guided tour of the gallery and then get to create their own unique works of art in Renoir’s Workshop.

The gallery will also be giving adults the chance to create works of art as of February 3 during a four-week drawing workshop that is tailor-made for sketching still life.

You don’t have to consider yourself much of an artist to join the workshop, you can be an art enthusiast.

The drawing workshop will run for four sessions, on each Wednesday of February from 6.30pm until 8.30pm. The two-hour sessions will be led by experienced artist and educator, Alexia Michaelides, who will give one-on-one guidance and also a short lecture.

You will be surrounded by a world-class collection – which is bound to inspire your own art – while learning the secrets of the great masters. There is also a great treat for all participants as they will get a sneak peek at the gallery’s reserve collection – even more of a push to get you creating your own still-life drawing with pencil and charcoal.

If you are not sure what you have to bring with you to get your still-life drawing started, there will be a package with the necessary materials for the workshop available at the gallery for €15.

Just as there will be more guided tours at the Leventis Museum, this is the first of a series of thematic workshops that will be offered by the gallery. Each workshop will concentrate on different materials and subjects.

There is limited availability, so send an email to [email protected] or call Demetra Antonara on 22-668838 to book your place.
