Unemployment rate stable at 15.7% in December, Eurostat says

The unemployment rate in December remained unchanged at 15.7 per cent, compared with the month before, and fell from 16.5 per cent a year before, the European Union’s statistical office said.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate among people younger than 25 also remained unchanged at just below 32 per cent in December, compared with the previous month, down from over 34 per cent in December 2015, Eurostat said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

Cyprus’s unemployment rate among men stood at 15.6 per cent and 15.9 per cent among women in December, Eurostat said.

Cyprus’s unemployment rate was the euro area’s third-highest; Greece had the highest rate with over 24 per cent, trailed by Spain with 20.8 per cent, according to Eurostat. Germany had the lowest unemployment rate in the euro area with 4.5 per cent, followed by Malta and Austria with 5.1 per cent, and Austria with 5.8 per cent.
