British High Commissioner impressed with talks’ progress

British High Commissioner Ric Todd

Ric Todd has hailed progress in the Cyprus negotiations saying the way the talks were being handled by President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci had impressed the UK and the rest of the international community.

An excerpt from Todd’s interview on CyBC1 television scheduled for Thursday, was aired by the public broadcaster on Wednesday.

According to the Greek translated version of his comments, as no transcript was made available ahead of the broadcast, Todd said it was clear there was a real opportunity for the people of Cyprus to achieve reunification. A solution, he added would benefit not only Cypriots but also the region.

He also spoke about the issue of guarantees, reiterating the UK’s position that it was ready to abandon its guarantor rights over Cyprus under the deal to be agreed by the two sides. Britain, he said, fully supported the leaders and would do everything possible to continue that support.

He also repeated Britain’s offer to return up to half of the areas of the British bases after a Cyprus settlement but also stressed that the bases were of strategic importance to Cyprus’ geographical location with advantages not just for the UK but also for Europe, and for Cyprus.
