Baby dies from meningococcal septicaemia (Updated)

The Makarios hospital

A 16-month-old baby died on Monday morning at Makarios hospital, according to health ministry sources.

After showing high fever, the baby’s parents decided to take it to the private clinic on Sunday, from where it was transferred to Makarios.

Doctors diagnosed meningococcal septicaemia, and the baby was placed in an incubator.

However, on Monday morning its condition deteriorated, and died after suffering a heart attack.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, the health ministry said the baby’s death was an isolated incident and said there was no cause for concern among the general public.

The baby, the statement said, was transferred to the Makarios hospital’s intensive care unit from a private clinic in Limassol, but, despite the doctors’ efforts, died at noon Monday.

“Based on the clinical picture, the incident was treated as a bacterial infection, triggering the appropriate protocol,” it added.

“For this reason, all high-risk individuals that came in contact with the baby were identified, treated, and given instructions.”
